Protecting Your Privacy on Cafe Q

Cafe Q Sacramento does not compile or distribute information from any member. We maintain a database of member names and email addresses in the event that we decide at some time in the future to use a proprietary email program to send out non-commercial newsletters to members. The administrator is the only person who has excess to the list and does not make it available to any other person, business or organization for any reason unless ordered to do so by an appropriate court of law.

However, every member should understand that any public information you post can be seen by virtually anyone in the world unless the information is posted only for the viewing of your friends or yourself. (Photos, videos, blogs, etc. which permit you to restrict the persons who can see it.)  Here are some tips on how to protect your privacy.

Do not use your full name. If you want to ensure that no one can Google your name and city and find you, use only your first name or nick-name or other identifier. However, you should realize that a person browsing the member's gallery would be able to find you by your picture. If you entered your full name hen you registered and wish to change it, just click on my page and click the "settings" link in the left column.  You can edit your profile here including changing your name or email address.

Do not post information you do not want everyone in the world to see. If you are a kleptomaniac or alcoholic or were fired from your last job for surfing for porn when you were supposed to be making phone calls,  it would probably be unwise to post it here. Word does get around. But, what you say in your private messages is unavailable to the administrator.  The NING company, however, maintains the database for this site and their database would have a record of every private message sent.  It is possible that they could be subpoened by a court to produce records of your messages if you were being investigated for a crime.  So your best bet, for maximum protection, is to get the email address or phone number of any friend you want to send messages to that you don't ever want anyone else to see.

Using privacy settings for features: Many of the features on the site have privacy settings that will restrict access to only yourself or your fiends. use these features as you wish.

Private Groups: If you want to set up a group but don't want everyone on the site to see the members or the discussion forum, you can designate the Group as a Moderated Group under the privacy heading in the left column.  This will require all members to be approved and cause your group's name and description to be displayed but not the members or other features of the group.  See the "Older/Younger" group for an example of a private group.
