Cafe Q - Sacramento

I first got into the Sacramento Farmers Market scene in 2003 after I retired and rented an art studio at 10th and J Street in downtown Sacramento. Kitty-corner across from my studio was Cesare Chavez Plaza and I soon discovered that it was host to a vibrant Farmers Market every Wednesday. I also discovered that the Westminster Presbyterian Church, which was just a couple of blocks across the Capitol grounds, also had a bag lunch concert every Wednesday at noon.

So my schedule was set. Every Wednesday morning around 10:30, I would clean my brushes and head across the street to Cesare Chavez Plaza to stock up with veggies, fruits, bread and cheese for the week. Then I would take the haul back to my studio where I would make a cheese sandwich and wash some fruit and maybe a couple of sticks of celery and head across the Capitol grounds to the concert at 12th and N Street. I was a happy camper.

THE FARMERS MARKET
Photobucket
The Farmers Market at Cesare Chavez plaza is a certified farmers market, meaning that all produce offered and all products sold are locally grown and sold by the farmers themselves or the persons who produced them. No commercially grown or manufactured products are allowed. Vendors offer a wide selection of seasonal and regional produce, ripened on the vine or tree and generally picked early that morning or the previous afternoon. Local food stalls offer Mexican and Asian food to go and there is a coffee shop with tables and outdoor seating at one corner of the plaza.

MUSIC AT NOON
Photobucket
The Music at Noon Concerts at the Westminster Presbyterian Church are the brainchild of its program director, Brad Slocum. Westminster is an older Mediterranean style building with a large dome and pipe organ. Music is generally classical but may include ethnic. and even jazz or show tunes occasionally, but is always excellent. They are always free to the public, have a printed program and a large jar at the entrance where you can leave a donation for the musicians.
